The books for World Book Night 2013 have been chosen and include “Girl with a Pearl Earring” the novel based on the painting by Vermeer, which was made into a successful film. Also included is “Casino Royale” by Ian Fleming, the foundation for the film which started Daniel Craig’s James Bond career.
I was a World Book Night giver last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of simply giving away 24 copies of my choice “Touching the Void” by Joe Simpson! The books were well received, and, even better, because they had enjoyed the book many went on to read other books.
I think reading is a wonderful activity, but can be seen to have less appeal than a screen, nowadays. If you have read and enjoyed any of the books below do please apply to World Book Night and tell your friends. It is an amazing idea which was started in the UK by Jamie Byng and has now spread to the US and to Germany.
Sebastian Barry – The Secret Scripture
Malorie Blackman – Noughts and Crosses
Tracy Chevalier – Girl with a Pearl Earring
Jasper Fforde – The Eyre Affair
Ian Fleming – Casino Royale
Philippa Gregory – The White Queen
E.H Gombrich – A Little History of the World
Sophie Hannah – Little Face
Josephine Hart – Damage
Victoria Hislop – The Island
Jackie Kay – Red Dust Road
Andy McNab – Last Night another Soldier
Jojo Moyes = Me Before You
Patrick Ness = The Knife of Never letting Go
Bernard Schlink – The Reader
Alexander McCall Smith – No 1 Ladies Detective Agency
Robert Louis Stevenson – Treasure Island
Rose Tremain – The Road Home
Jeanette Winterson – Why be happy when you could be Normal?
John Wagner – Judge Dredd: The Dark Judges ( a graphic novel)
There is a huge variety and certainly a few books on this list which I have been meaning to read. I will use the time over Christmas to read them, as applications to be a giver only close on January 23. However you probably are more likely to be chosen if you get your request in early.
You can find out more from World Book Night and apply to be a giver and help to encourage a love of reading. After all, if you are a small business owner you probably know how important it is to make time for doing things you enjoy. It helps to keep you fresh and relaxed, improves the time you spend working, and can create great conversations and better relationships with customers.
