Thanks Charlotte. Generalisations are obviously not the whole truth and there are good networking men out there! Just not as many as the women ..

Goodness Diane that sounds like quite a difficult networking meeting!
Thanks for your comment - interesting that you have been in a grey suit yourself and seen both sides of the fence.

Whenever women get together there is often a lot of laughter!

I totally agree with this view of networking and how it has changed for women. However, not every industry has moved with the times. I recently went to a networking event for "business professionals"e.g. accountants, lawyers, bankers etc . Neeedless to say, I was once one of these myself locked in a man's world. I wore a grey suit and carried as briefcase. I stayed in hotels having posh meals when I cried out to be at home with my feet up having a simple meal.I now work in a very different industry, maybe one held in not so much high regard but where I can change people's lives rather than push paper and take home a big salary. The event was old style. I felt I was assessed by my appearance ( which was not professional business attire. It was difficult to break into any conversation and it seemed that very few people were interested in me as a person. The men on the whole stayed with those they knew. Perhaps when you have a corporate salary the need to relate to other business owners is less pressing. I left as soon as was polite having given out not one business card and felt thoroughly exhausted. Thank goodness for women's networking which leaves me inspired and full of energy.

I wholeheartedly agree with all your comments about the difference between the ways men and women do business.

Women are much more inclined to do business together, whereas men do it in competition; and while most women love working from home, many men find it disempowering having no-one to compete with (broad generalisations, both!).
